The Name on the Label

Every Uncharted Release Is Named After a Song. This One Earns It.

Uncharted Whisky Co. names its single casks after the songs they love, and "Tauchin' About A Revolution" tips its cap to Tracy Chapman while making a bigger point: Glentauchers almost never gets to speak this loudly. A blending workhorse, unpeated, usually diluted into anonymity, here it spends eleven full years in a single first fill Oloroso sherry cask and arrives at a thumping 60.7% natural cask strength.

Just 246 bottles exist worldwide. 30 of them are coming to the US, exclusively through The Whiskey Lab.

Glentauchers sits at Mulben, between Keith and Rothes in the heart of Speyside. Founded in 1897 by whisky baron James Buchanan to feed his blends, it has spent nearly its entire life doing exactly that: today it is one of the core malts inside Ballantine's. Official single malt bottlings are almost nonexistent, so independent single casks like this are the only real way to taste what the distillery can do.

The spirit itself is classic Speyside: light, floral, orchard-fruity. Give it eleven years in an active first fill Oloroso cask and that delicacy turns into depth, apricot jam and hazelnut and dessert wine, without losing the fruit underneath. Unpeated, non-chill filtered, natural colour, bottled exactly as the cask delivered it.

Distillery profile, Glentauchers

  • Founded in 1897 at Mulben, near Keith, by blending magnate James Buchanan of Black & White fame.
  • Owned since 2005 by Chivas Brothers (Pernod Ricard), producing almost entirely for blends, most notably Ballantine's.
  • The house style is light, floral, and fruit-forward, a classic Speyside canvas that active sherry wood transforms rather than decorates.
  • Official bottlings are vanishingly rare; nearly every Glentauchers single malt on the market comes through an independent bottler.

Cask profile, 1st fill Oloroso sherry

Oloroso is the dry, oxidatively aged style of sherry. Years of contact with air inside the cask build the nutty, leathery, savoury depth the style is known for, and a first fill cask hands all of it to the spirit.

This is a full maturation, not a finish. Eleven years of first fill Oloroso on a delicate Speyside distillate produces a whisky that reads sweet up front, apricot jam and butterscotch, then dries into marzipan, hazelnut, and oak. At 60.7% it delivers all of it at full volume.

Tasting notes, from Uncharted Whisky Co.
Nose
Hazelnut, sultanas, butterscotch, apricot jam, and dessert wine.
Palate
The apricot jam is the first thing to jump out. Rich, sweet, and smoooooth. A marzipan and touch of dry oak acts to balance the sweetness.
Finish
The big fruit flavours move aside to allow the nut flavours back alongside an oakiness and warmth.
A Ballantine's workhorse set loose in first fill Oloroso for eleven years, at 60.7%. That is worth tauchin' about.
