Masterfully Aged: Invergordon's 50-Year Single Grain Scotch Whisky
Discover the legacy of Invergordon, the Highland grain distillery established in 1961 on the Cromarty Firth. Built to supply grain whisky for Scotland’s largest blends, Invergordon became known for its tall column stills, which impart a light, elegant character that develops extraordinary depth with long maturation. While most of its output disappeared into blends, a small handful of casks were set aside and left to mature for decades. This bottling, drawn from a single cask after half a century, represents a once-in-a-lifetime chance to experience Invergordon in its purest form.
Distinctive Features of Distillation:
-
Column Still Heritage: Invergordon’s towering stills produce a delicate, refined spirit, designed for consistency but capable of transforming into something extraordinary when given the gift of time.
-
Half a Century of Patience: Fifty years in oak has softened the spirit’s edges and coaxed out layers of fruit, vanilla, and gentle wood. Extended interaction with air in the cask, the so-called “angels’ share” has concentrated its character into something profound with a beautiful 1st Fill Ex-bourbon finish for year 49.
-
A Rare Outturn: With less than 300 bottles worldwide, this release embodies the scarcity and wonder of grain whisky matured beyond imagination. Each pour is history in liquid form.
The final year in a first fill ex-bourbon barrel imparts a heightened richness, layering vibrant vanilla, honeyed sweetness, and toasted oak onto the already refined spirit. This finishing touch brightens the whisky’s fruit character and adds a warm depth, amplifying complexity without overshadowing the grace that half a century of maturation has built. The result is a harmony of aged subtlety and fresh bourbon-cask vibrancy, elevating the whisky’s finish into something both timeless and immediate.
Nose
Fresh pour, fresh cut green apple. Swirl it in the tulip glass and it opens to candied fruit coated with caramelized sugar. Go back in for your third scent: ripe, sweet cherries muddled into a freshly poured Old Fashioned.
Palate
Long and warming. The warmth builds slowly and peaks around thirty seconds, with cinnamon spice rising as if sitting by the first fire of the winter season. The finish lingers for nearly two minutes, carrying soft echoes of oak and fruit.
Finish
Initially tastes like lemon sherbet, as you step into the shade on a hot day and take your first taste after walking in Central Park. The taste grows, long and warm, like a freshly baked gingerbread cookie.
Overall: This dram covers the seasons, from spring growth to summer sweetness to the warmth desired in winter.
