MASTERFULLY AGED: INVERGORDON 50 YEAR OLD SINGLE GRAIN SCOTCH WHISKY
Half a Century in Oak
A Once-in-a-Lifetime Invergordon
Invergordon was built in 1961 on the Cromarty Firth to feed Scotland's largest blends with consistent, elegant grain whisky from its towering column stills. The light spirit that served as a backbone for blenders turns out to be something else entirely when given 50 years of patient maturation. Most of Invergordon's output disappeared into household-name blends decades ago. A small number of casks were set aside.
This is one of those casks. Distilled in 1974, matured for 49 years, then finished for a full year in a 1st fill ex-bourbon barrel before bottling in November 2025. 120 bottles worldwide. Half a century distilled into a single release.
Fifty years changes a whisky. The edges soften. The fruit deepens. The angels take their share and what remains concentrates into something that cannot be replicated or rushed. That final year in first fill ex-bourbon oak was not a finish for finish's sake. It was the right cask at the right moment to brighten a spirit that had spent decades growing quiet, lifting the fruit and adding honeyed vanilla and toasted oak without overshadowing the grace that time had already built.
The result is a harmony of aged subtlety and fresh bourbon-cask vibrancy. Natural colour. Non-chill filtered. Single cask. Each pour is history in liquid form.
Distillery profile, Invergordon
- Founded in 1961 on the Cromarty Firth in the Northern Highlands, built to supply grain whisky to Scotland's largest blenders.
- Defined by its tall column stills, which produce a light, refined, remarkably consistent spirit designed for blending.
- That delicate character is precisely why long maturation works. Light spirit does not fight the cask. It absorbs it, layer by layer, over decades.
- Independent bottlings of Invergordon at this age are vanishingly rare. Most of what was distilled in 1974 has been drunk, blended, or evaporated long ago.
Cask profile, 1st fill ex-bourbon finish
After 49 years of slow, patient maturation, this spirit was transferred into a 1st fill ex-bourbon barrel for its final year in oak. First fill casks are the most active wood a distiller can use, the bourbon residue still alive with vanillin, coconut, and charred sugar.
A finish this active on a spirit this old is a precision move. Too long and the wood flattens the whisky. Too short and the cask adds nothing. A single year was the window, and it lands exactly where it should: lifting the fruit, brightening the honey, adding a warm layer of vanilla and toasted oak without covering what 50 years built.
