A Light Bulb in His Forties

Iain Croucher was, in his own words, "stravaiging through my early 40s, completely unsure what I was going to do." Then he came across a parcel of whisky that was well above his means. That cask was the moment. He bought it. North Star Spirits was born in 2016. What started as one cask is now Glasgow's premier independent whisky bottler, operating from Alexandria with a small team that includes Jim Hutchison and Euan Sinclair. Family-run craftsmanship, every bottle hand-selected, every cask chosen because it had something to say.

North Star doesn't chase trends. They look for the casks that defy expectations — a young Annandale matured in peated sherry, a Lindores in the unexpected hands of their Obscurities & Curiosities series, a Bowmore that drinks far above its age. If a cask has a story worth telling, they'll find it.

Where the Casks Are Drawn

The Bottling Hall
North Star's bottling hall in Alexandria is where each cask gets its final say. Casks are re-racked, finished, and bottled by hand by a team of three. There is no automation pretending to be craftsmanship. Iain, Jim, and Euan rack the casks, pick the bottling moment, and pull the corks personally. When TWL works with North Star, we work with the actual hands that made the whisky.
A Working Partnership
Beyond the bottlings TWL imports under the North Star brand, Iain is now bottling Whispering Waters releases at the North Star facility, including our forthcoming Black Label. That partnership is the model we believe in. When companies get too big, small brands get left behind in the pursuit of bigger business. TWL works directly with founders and operators who care about the whisky as much as we do. North Star is one of those operators.
