Tri Carragh Dalmunach 9 Year Old, 1st Fill PX Sherry Barrique Finish
A single cask from Dalmunach, the newest distillery in Speyside, distilled on March 15, 2017 and finished for 27 months in a first fill Pedro Ximenez sherry barrique. Bottled by Tri Carragh at 59.3% cask strength, natural colour, non-chill filtered. One of 262 bottles, Release 11.
Dalmunach opened in June 2015 on the site of the old Imperial distillery, built by Chivas Brothers to make a bright, fruity, modern Speyside spirit for their blends. It is only occasionally released as a single malt, and only by independents. Twenty-seven months in first fill PX is not a quick finish; it is the better part of a quarter of this whisky's life in the sweetest, darkest sherry wood there is. Tri Carragh's notes: red currants, maraschino cherries, lemon meringue, pears poached in red wine, cinnamon and cloves, at nearly 60%.
About Tri Carragh
Tri Carragh is Gaelic for three pillars, a nod to the three ingredients that make whisky: water, barley and yeast. The Edinburgh bottler selects single casks one at a time, choosing each for the conversation it will start. Every release is small. Every release is final. When the bottles are gone, that cask is gone.
Release 11 is Tri Carragh's autumn 2026 outturn, selected by The Whiskey Lab for import to the United States alongside the Aberfeldy 12 year old.
Distillery profile, Dalmunach
- Opened in 2015 at Carron, on the River Spey, on the site of the demolished Imperial distillery (1897 to 1998). Built by Chivas Brothers for around 25 million pounds.
- Designed around the spirit: eight stills in a glass-walled stillhouse arranged so the whole process is visible, and a make that is bright, fruity and clean, intended for Chivas Regal and Ballantine's.
- There is no official single malt. Dalmunach reaches drinkers almost exclusively through independent single casks, and only a handful have ever been released.
- At 9 years old, this is some of the oldest Dalmunach anyone has bottled.
Cask profile, 1st fill PX barrique
Pedro Ximenez is the sweetest wine in Jerez, pressed from sun-dried grapes, and a first fill barrique of it hands over everything it has: dried fruit, treacle, dark colour, spice.
Tri Carragh gave this cask 27 months in that wood, long enough to count as a second maturation rather than a finish. On a young, fruit-forward Dalmunach spirit the PX does not have much to fight, so it comes through loud: raisin, fig, chocolate, a syrupy weight, with the distillery's bright fruit keeping it from turning heavy.
Distilled March 15, 2017, bottled at 59.3%, natural colour, non-chill filtered. 262 bottles, 60 for The Whiskey Lab.
