A Speyside single malt from Craigellachie, aged 16 years and bottled at 54.4% ABV. Matured in a second fill bourbon barrel, with an outturn of 125 bottles.
Additional cask detail from the bottler: reracked in June 2024, ex-refill bourbon cask.
Style cue from the tasting notes: orchard fruit sweetness, baked apple pastry, and a brighter, cereal-led profile when reduced with water.
Built in 1890 and designed by Charles Doig, Craigellachie was constructed with the intent of producing a lighter, fruitier character. One early descriptor even references pineapple as a desirable aroma.
Historically it served as a core malt in Mackie’s Old Smuggler and Old Gaelic blends, and later fell under DCL through White Horse. Following a 1998 industry merger, the Monopolies Board required divestments, and Craigellachie was acquired by Bacardi, which still owns it.
Notes above are the bottler’s tasting notes.
