Tri Carragh Aberfeldy 12 Year Old, STR Hogshead
A single cask of Aberfeldy, distilled on July 28, 2014, and matured in an STR hogshead: a cask that was shaved back to fresh wood, toasted and re-charred before filling. Bottled by Tri Carragh at 55.3% cask strength, natural colour, non-chill filtered. One of 247 bottles, Release 11.
Aberfeldy is almost never seen as a single cask. It is the heart of Dewar's and the distillery keeps it that way. Tri Carragh bought several STR casks of it and, in their words, when they tried this one they knew it had to be bottled. The STR treatment strips a tired cask back to active oak and adds a layer of char, so the whisky picks up red fruit, vanilla and toasted spice fast and clean. Their notes read like a fruit stall: strawberries, banana, mango, lychee, then cardamom and five spice.
About Tri Carragh
Tri Carragh is Gaelic for three pillars, a nod to the three ingredients that make whisky: water, barley and yeast. The Edinburgh bottler selects single casks one at a time, choosing each for the conversation it will start. Every release is small. Every release is final. When the bottles are gone, that cask is gone.
Release 11 is Tri Carragh's autumn 2026 outturn, selected by The Whiskey Lab for import to the United States alongside the Dalmunach 9 year old.
Distillery profile, Aberfeldy
- Built in 1896 by John Dewar & Sons on the River Tay in Perthshire, on the site of the Pitilie burn, water Dewar's had wanted for decades.
- Still owned by Bacardi through Dewar's, and the spine of the Dewar's White Label and 12 year old blends. The official single malt range exists, but single casks are rare.
- House style is honey: a soft, waxy, heather-honey sweetness with orchard fruit, the product of long fermentations and a gentle, unhurried distillation.
- Aberfeldy's own water, from the Pitilie burn, is famous for tiny traces of gold.
Cask profile, STR hogshead
STR stands for shaved, toasted and re-charred. A used cask, usually an ex-red wine cask, is shaved inside to expose fresh oak, toasted to caramelise the wood sugars, then charred to open the grain. The result is virgin oak influence alongside the remnants of the cask's original occupant. It is the technique Dr Jim Swan built Kavalan, Penderyn and Kilchoman on.
On Aberfeldy's honeyed spirit, twelve years in STR wood means red fruit, vanilla, toasted spice and a long oaky grip, with the distillery's heather and orchard still underneath.
Distilled July 28, 2014, bottled at 55.3%, natural colour, non-chill filtered. 247 bottles, 60 for The Whiskey Lab.
