THE BRAEVAL 16 DUO, TWO 16 YEAR SINGLE CASKS
Braeval is the highest distillery in Scotland and almost never bottled under its own name. Here are two 16 year old single casks of it, distilled the same year, bottled by two different houses from two casks with nothing in common. One spent seven months in a tiny red wine octave that once held peated whisky. The other spent all sixteen years in a white port barrique. Polar opposites in the glass, and both, frankly, damn good.
Ninety-two bottles of the Tri Carragh exist. The Little Brown Dog is a single cask. We can put together twelve matched sets, and the set is 10% cheaper than buying the two bottles on their own.
Bottle one: Tri Carragh, 2nd Fill Red Wine Octave
- Distilled at Braeval February 2, 2010, 16 years old, Tri Carragh Release 10.
- Sixteen years in the primary cask, then seven months in a 50 litre red wine octave that previously held peated whisky.
- 62.7% cask strength, natural colour, non-chill filtered. 92 bottles worldwide.
- Tri Carragh's notes: red apples, orange peel, pomegranate and raspberry on the nose. Red berries, redcurrant, cranberry and pink peppercorn on the palate. Drying red fruits, gentle spice and a whisper of wood smoke.
Bottle two: Little Brown Dog, 1st Fill White Port Barrique
- Distilled at Braeval in 2010, bottled 2026 at 16 years old.
- Full maturation, not a finish: every one of the sixteen years in a first fill white port barrique.
- 57.3% cask strength, natural colour, non-chill filtered. A single cask.
- White port wood pushes bright stone fruit and red fruit with a confected sweetness and a dry, grippy edge. A profile well outside the bourbon-and-sherry lines.
Why a set
Pour them side by side. Same distillery, same age, and the only thing that changed is the wood. Seven months of red wine and a ghost of peat against sixteen years of white port. It is the clearest lesson in cask influence we can put in a box, from a distillery most people will never see bottled on its own.
