FINN THOMSON WHISKY STRATHMILL 15 YEAR OLD, COLOMBIAN OAK FINISH

A Speyside distillery flying under the radar

About Finn Thomson Whisky

Finn Thomson is the ninth generation of Scotland's oldest whisky family. The Thomson name traces back to the 1770s through Perthshire, where Peter Thomson Ltd built the beloved Beneagles blended whisky using casks from Longmorn, Clynelish, North British, and other lesser-known workhorses.

Finn Thomson Whisky continues that tradition as an independent single cask bottler. Every release is hand-selected, bottled at cask strength, non-chill filtered, with natural colour. Eye on the past. Vision for the future.

Distillery profile, Strathmill

  • Founded in 1891 in Keith, Speyside, originally a corn mill before being converted to a distillery.
  • Owned by Diageo and primarily supplies malt to the J&B blended whisky range. Single malt releases are uncommon.
  • Strathmill's distillate has a uniquely oily profile, with mouthfeel and texture that set it apart from other Speyside distilleries.
  • A distillery flying under the radar, but one whose character shines when bottled independently at cask strength.

The story of this cask

I always love releasing a whisky from a distillery I have never bottled before. Strathmill stands out as a distillery that has a uniquely oily profile. Identifying that mouthfeel and texture in casks always excites me and it is one of the great perks of bottling a higher abv whisky where you maintain the mouthfeel that dilution may remove.

This Strathmill has purposefully been paired with a Colombian Oak cask for finishing. The maturation of Scotch whisky has for decades been dominated by American and European Oak, but more recently other species have been experimented with in a quest for innovation.

Colombian Oak offers a balance between the richness and spices of European Oak combined with the vanilla and delicacy of American Oak. To me, this is the perfect balance for a distillery like Strathmill. The oily distillery character allows it to prosper with richer flavours from the wood. The final result, after 15 years of ageing, is a whisky with an intensity of flavour: tropical fruits, marzipan, and butterscotch.

Tasting notes
Nose
Rich and tropical. Mango, pineapple, and dried papaya lead, with a layer of marzipan and butterscotch underneath. Colombian Oak brings vanilla with a woodsy, herbal spice edge that you do not get from standard American oak. Coconut cream and white pepper emerge with air.
Palate
Oily and broad, exactly as Strathmill should be. Tropical fruit intensity hits first, mango and candied pineapple, then the oak opens into warm baking spice, cinnamon, and butterscotch. 56% ABV carries the richness without overheating. Mid-palate shifts into almond and a gentle vanilla crème brûlée note.
Finish
Long and buttery. The oily mouthfeel persists, with the tropical fruit fading into caramel, toasted almond, and warm wood spice. A dry oak edge closes things out. Distinctive and memorable.
