FINN THOMSON WHISKY GLENKINCHIE 12 YEAR OLD, REFILL HOGSHEAD
About Finn Thomson Whisky
Finn Thomson is the ninth generation of Scotland's oldest whisky family. The Thomson name traces back to the 1770s through Perthshire, where Peter Thomson Ltd built the beloved Beneagles blended whisky using casks from Longmorn, Clynelish, North British, and other lesser-known workhorses.
Finn Thomson Whisky continues that tradition as an independent single cask bottler. Every release is hand-selected, bottled at cask strength, non-chill filtered, with natural colour. Eye on the past. Vision for the future.
Glenkinchie is rarely seen outside of official Diageo bottlings. Independent releases from this Lowland distillery are genuinely hard to find, which makes this 12 year old cask something of a curiosity and a privilege to bottle.
Distilled March 2014. Bottled March 2026. Single cask at cask strength 54.8%, non-chill filtered, natural colour. 282 bottles. Imported exclusively by The Whiskey Lab.
Distillery profile, Glenkinchie
- Founded in 1837 in the village of Pencaitland, East Lothian, just south-east of Edinburgh.
- Often referred to as "Edinburgh's Malt", Glenkinchie is a benchmark for the Lowland style: elegant, approachable, and quietly complex.
- Uses the largest pot stills in the Scotch whisky industry, producing a light, grassy spirit that rewards patience and subtle cask selection.
- As part of Diageo's Classic Malts range, Glenkinchie casks are almost exclusively reserved for internal blending. Independent bottlings are exceptionally rare.
The story of this cask
Some distilleries are rarely seen beyond official bottlings. Glenkinchie is one of them. In all my years in whisky, I have never encountered, nor tasted, an independently bottled Glenkinchie.
That rarity alone makes this 12 year old cask something of a curiosity. Situated just outside Edinburgh, and often referred to as "Edinburgh's Malt", Glenkinchie has long been regarded as a benchmark for the Lowland style: elegant, approachable, and quietly complex.
This particular cask was matured in a very active refill hogshead. While technically refill, the oak has played a confident role over the past twelve years, contributing an added layer of toffee sweetness and soft structure.
Yet what is most pleasing is that the distillery character remains unmistakable. The bright, grassy freshness and gentle fruit that define Glenkinchie continue to shine through, supported rather than dominated by the wood.
