About Finn Thomson Whisky
Finn Thomson is the ninth generation of Scotland's oldest whisky family. The Thomson name traces back to the 1770s through Perthshire, where Peter Thomson Ltd built the beloved Beneagles blended whisky using casks from Longmorn, Clynelish, North British, and other lesser-known workhorses.
Finn Thomson Whisky continues that tradition as an independent single cask bottler. Every release is hand-selected, bottled at cask strength, non-chill filtered, with natural colour. Eye on the past. Vision for the future.
A single cask Benrinnes, one of Finn Thomson's favourite Speyside distilleries, distilled on 14 July 2014 and matured for 11 years in an active first-fill bourbon barrel. Bottled on 19 May 2026 at a muscular 57.4% cask strength.
Just 261 bottles were drawn from cask 312344. Non-chill filtered, natural colour, 700ml. Imported exclusively by The Whiskey Lab.
Distillery profile, Benrinnes
- Founded in 1826 on the northern slopes of Ben Rinnes mountain, near Aberlour in the heart of Speyside.
- Ran an unusual partial triple distillation regime until 2007, and still cools its spirit in traditional worm tubs, giving a rich, meaty, full-bodied character.
- Owned by Diageo; almost the entire output disappears into blends such as Johnnie Walker and J&B.
- Official single malt bottlings are scarce, so independent single casks are the main way to taste Benrinnes on its own terms.
The story of this cask
Benrinnes has long been one of my favourite Speyside distilleries. It's a spirit with real weight and character, rich, slightly meaty and full-bodied, but it needs the right cask to let it really shine. A tired cask can leave it feeling a bit closed, but an active first-fill bourbon barrel brings it to life. This cask is one of the best examples of that marriage I've come across.
The bourbon influence is unmistakable, with layers of vanilla wrapped around Benrinnes' rich, savoury spirit. As it opens up, tropical fruits begin to emerge, and at 57.4% cask strength there's a wonderfully oily texture that carries everything across the palate. For me, that's the difference between a good whisky and a great one.
I found this cask at the end of one of those long warehouse days where your palate is starting to wonder what you've done to it. We'd pulled around sixty samples, and after nosing and tasting our way through about half of them with the rest of the team, this one made everyone stop. We all looked at each other and came to exactly the same conclusion: it was the standout cask of the day.
People often ask what my favourite style of whisky is, and I always come back to full bourbon maturation. When spirit and cask are in perfect balance, I don't think there's anything better. For me, this Benrinnes is exactly that.
