Fib Whisky Mackmyra 8 Year Old, Green Tea Cask, Amontillado Finish
A single cask of Mackmyra Swedish single malt that spent eight years in a cask seasoned with green tea, then just over three months in a first fill Amontillado sherry hogshead. Bottled by Fib Whisky at 45.4%, natural colour, non-chill filtered. One of 144 bottles.
Mackmyra single casks are already weird and wonderful, in Fib's words, so they chose a finish that respected the ridiculousness. Amontillado is the dry, nutty middle of the sherry family, and three months was enough to add dried fruit and length without smothering the green tea. Sweet pear, zesty citrus, menthol, then the sherry rounds it out. Fib's own question on the label: have we out-Mackmyra'd Mackmyra? You decide.
About Fib Whisky
Fib Whisky is a small independent bottler in Kirkcaldy, Fife, run by brothers Iain and Andrew Mundy. The name is the old one: before it was Fife, the kingdom was Fib, named for one of the seven sons of the Pictish king Cruithne, and the Pictish carvings on every label come from that heritage. The company was founded with the late Aedan Burt and released its first bottlings in late 2022.
The house rule is bold, never bland. Nothing coloured, nothing chill filtered, everything at cask strength. Each single cask is split in two: the first half is bottled as it is in the Copper & Oak series, the second half is given what Fib calls a funky finish and released later as Permutations. This is the after.
Fib is new to the United States and new to The Whiskey Lab. These three bottles are their first in America.
Distillery profile, Mackmyra
- Sweden's first malt whisky distillery, dreamed up on a 1998 ski trip by eight engineering friends from Stockholm, founded in 1999, with its first release in 2006 selling out in under twenty minutes.
- Everything is sourced within about 120 kilometres: Dalarna barley, local peat cut with juniper, Swedish oak. The Gravity Distillery, opened in 2011, is fed top to bottom to cut energy use by nearly half.
- Casks mature 50 metres underground in the disused Bodås mine.
- Famous for unusual wood. A green tea seasoned cask is on brand.
Cask profile, green tea then Amontillado
The spirit spent eight years in a cask seasoned with green tea, the kind of experiment Mackmyra is known for. That is where the menthol, the citrus and the tea itself come from.
Fib then moved this half of the cask into a first fill Amontillado hogshead for just over three months. Amontillado sits between Fino and Oloroso: dry, nutty, oxidative, with dried fruit rather than sugar. It is the finish that made the whisky fuller, richer and much longer than its unfinished Copper & Oak sibling.
Bottled at 45.4%, natural colour, non-chill filtered. 144 bottles. The label shows a rune stone in a Swedish landscape at sunset.
