Fib Whisky Amrut 6 Year Old, Ruby Port Barrique Finish
The other half of the cask. Fib Whisky split their six year old Amrut ex-rye barrel in two, bottled the first half untouched as Copper & Oak Series III, and gave this half an eight month finish in a first fill Ruby Port barrique. Bottled at 59.1% cask strength, natural colour, non-chill filtered. One of 75 bottles.
Ruby Port is the young, fruit-forward end of the Port family, and a first fill barrique of it does not hold back. Fib's notes: fresh berries and sticky pomegranate seeds on the nose, rich velvety figs on the palate, and a finish that runs semi-dry and very long. Put it next to the ex-rye bottling and you are tasting what eight months of Port wood does to one cask of Indian malt. Fib's words: a dram you won't forget in a hurry.
About Fib Whisky
Fib Whisky is a small independent bottler in Kirkcaldy, Fife, run by brothers Iain and Andrew Mundy. The name is the old one: before it was Fife, the kingdom was Fib, named for one of the seven sons of the Pictish king Cruithne, and the Pictish carvings on every label come from that heritage. The company was founded with the late Aedan Burt, who imported this very cask, and released its first bottlings in late 2022.
The house rule is bold, never bland. Nothing coloured, nothing chill filtered, everything at cask strength. Each single cask is split in two: the first half is bottled as it is in the Copper & Oak series, the second half is given what Fib calls a funky finish and released later as Permutations. Buy both and you taste the same cask before and after. This is the after.
Fib is new to the United States and new to The Whiskey Lab. These three bottles are their first in America.
Distillery profile, Amrut
- Amrut Distilleries was founded in 1948 in Bangalore; the malt distillery followed in 1987, and in 2004 Amrut launched India's first single malt, in Glasgow of all places.
- Bangalore sits at 3,000 feet in a warm, dry climate. Casks lose 11 to 12% a year to the angels, so a six year old Amrut carries the oak influence of a far older Scotch.
- Unpeated barley from Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan; the spirit is rich, oily and tropical, built to stand up to serious wood.
- Jim Murray ranked Amrut Fusion the third best whisky in the world in 2010, and the distillery has not looked back.
Cask profile, Ruby Port barrique
Six years in an ex-rye barrel built the base: spice, dark sugar, tropical weight. Then Fib moved this half into a first fill Ruby Port barrique for eight months. Ruby is the youngest, brightest style of Port, bottled early to keep its red fruit, and the barrique had never held whisky before.
The result sits on top of the rye spice rather than replacing it: berries, pomegranate, figs, and a long semi-dry finish where the Port and the rye argue it out.
Bottled at 59.1%, natural colour, non-chill filtered. 75 bottles. The same Atakur hero stone artwork as its Copper & Oak sibling, in a pink sunset colourway.
