THE DAILUAINE DUO, TWO SINGLE CASKS FROM DRÀM MÒR
Dailuaine makes one of the heaviest spirits in Speyside and almost none of it ever leaves Johnnie Walker. Dràm Mòr, the husband-and-wife bottlers from Dumbarton, took two casks of it and finished them in wood from opposite ends of the world: a first fill Elijah Craig bourbon barrel from Kentucky, and a first fill Portuguese red wine cask.
Same muscular Speyside spirit, two years apart in age, and two completely different answers to what to do with it. Vanilla and pear crumble on one side, dark berries and wine-soaked spice on the other. Sold as a set, 10% cheaper than buying the two bottles on their own.
Bottle one: Dailuaine 11 Year, Elijah Craig Bourbon Barrel
- Distilled 2015, 11 years old. Finished in a first fill Elijah Craig barrel from Heaven Hill, Kentucky. Cask 300972.
- 52.9% cask strength, natural colour, non-chill filtered. 289 bottles, 41 in the USA.
- Dràm Mòr's notes: delicate vanilla and vanilla cream lifted by fruity pear crumble on the nose. Vanilla and cinnamon pear crumble, the pears poached in white wine. White pepper spice over exotic yellow fruit.
Bottle two: Dailuaine 13 Year, Portuguese Red Wine Cask
- 13 years old. Finished in a first fill Portuguese red wine cask. Cask 302722.
- 53.1% cask strength, natural colour, non-chill filtered. 312 bottles, 60 in the USA.
- Red wine wood trades sherry's sweetness for something drier and more vinous: dark berries, grape skin, gentle tannic grip. Dràm Mòr's own label: a rich and velvety mouthfeel with plenty of dried fruit and chocolate notes.
Why a set
Dailuaine is the distillery nobody bottles, and here it is twice, from the same house, in American oak that held bourbon against European wood that held red wine. Pour them side by side and the spirit stays constant while the cask does all the talking. It is also the easiest way to taste what Dràm Mòr does, on their first two releases in America.
One set contains one 700ml bottle of each release.
