The Occasion
From the Glass to the Bottle
For seven years Sunil Dyal lived on the other side of the pour. He built a whisky community of 30,000 on Instagram, designed VESL glassware, blew The Professional tasting glass one at a time in Europe, and hosted the WoW Tasting Experience. He has poured more whisky for more people than most bottlers ever will.
In 2026 he put his own name on a bottle for the first time. One cask, chosen the way he judges everything: in the glass. This is The First Wonder, and The Whiskey Lab is bringing 66 bottles of it to America.
The label says malt whisky, distilled 2011, matured in a single Moscatel sherry cask. It does not say where. We will: this is Glen Elgin, the Speyside distillery whose spirit disappears almost entirely into White Horse and rarely surfaces under its own name, let alone as a single cask.
Fourteen years old, bottled at 45.3%, natural colour, non-chill filtered. Distilled in Scotland, bottled in the Netherlands, and a debut release from someone who spent years learning exactly what he wanted before bottling it.
Distillery profile, Glen Elgin
- Founded in 1898 near Elgin in the heart of Speyside, one of the last distilleries built before the Pattison crash ended the Victorian whisky boom.
- A Diageo distillery and a cornerstone of the White Horse blend. Official single malt bottlings are rare, independent ones rarer still.
- Still condenses its spirit in worm tubs, the old copper coil method that leaves a heavier, fruitier new make than modern condensers.
- House character: orchard fruit, honey, and a waxy weight that stands up to sherry wood without disappearing beneath it.
Cask profile, Moscatel sherry cask
Moscatel is the sweet, floral cousin in the sherry family, made from Muscat grapes and rarely seen in Scotch. Where PX brings raisin and treacle, Moscatel brings orange blossom, apricot, and honeyed grape.
At 45.3% after fourteen years, this is a cask that has given up its strength gently. Expect the Moscatel to sit on top of Glen Elgin's fruit rather than bury it: lifted, aromatic, and easy to return to.
A single cask. When the 66 bottles are gone, that is the end of The First Wonder in America.
