TRI CARRAGH - INCHMURRIN 12 YEAR - EX PEATED RED WINE

Distilled January 2014 · 9 Months Ex Peated Red Wine · 78 Bottles
Region Highland Distillery Loch Lomond (Inchmurrin) Age 12 years ABV 59.9% Cask 2nd Fill Red Wine Octave Outturn 78 bottles Distill Date 06/01/2014

An Inchmurrin from Loch Lomond Distillery, finished for 9 months in a 2nd fill red wine octave that previously held peated whisky. Bottled at 59.9% cask strength, just 78 bottles total. The smallest outturn in this Tri Carragh release window.

Inchmurrin's natural character is light, fruity, and tropical. When that spirit meets a red wine cask carrying traces of peat, you get a balance that surprises drinkers expecting either a wine bomb or a peat bomb. Neither happens here.

About Tri Carragh

Tri Carragh is Gaelic for "three pillars," a nod to the three core ingredients that make whisky: water, barley, and yeast. The independent bottler selects single casks one at a time, choosing each one for the conversation it will start. Every release is small. Every release is final. When the bottles are gone, that cask is gone.

This release is part of Tri Carragh's quarterly outturn and was selected by The Whiskey Lab for import to the United States.

Distillery profile

  • Loch Lomond Distillery is one of the most versatile distilleries in Scotland, producing multiple malt styles from different still types under one roof.
  • Inchmurrin is the distillery's unpeated, light, and fruity style, produced on traditional swan-neck pot stills. Named after the largest island on Loch Lomond.
  • The spirit character is naturally tropical, fruity, and sweet, making it an ideal canvas for finishing casks that add weight and complexity without masking the distillery's brightness.
  • Loch Lomond's flexibility means independent bottlings of Inchmurrin show real variation depending on cask choice. This Tri Carragh selection is a study in how a small finishing cask can transform the profile.

Cask profile

A 2nd fill red wine octave that previously held peated whisky. Octaves are roughly 50 litres, much smaller than standard casks, which gives them outsized influence in shorter finishing windows.

The combination is unusual: red wine fruit and gentle smoke, both in trace amounts, applied to Inchmurrin's tropical fruit base for 9 months. The result is layered. The wine adds depth and a soft tannic structure, the residual smoke adds a quiet savoury note, and Inchmurrin's natural fruit holds its shape underneath.

Bottled at 59.9% cask strength, non-chill filtered, natural colour. 78 bottles total.

Tasting notes

Nose: Blackberries, blackcurrants and raspberry coulis lead, followed by lemon zest and candied orange peel. The distinctive fruity character of Inchmurrin brings notes of pear drops and tropical fruit beneath the darker berry influence.

Palate: Rich and mouth-coating with milk chocolate, caramel and forest fruits. Blackberry jam and blackcurrant continue alongside ginger spice, cinnamon and soft oak tannins.

Finish: Warming spice, dark berries and lingering chocolate-covered fruit.
