Why Pre-Orders Are Cheaper at The Whiskey Lab
From the Warehouse · September 2026
Last week someone ordered a bottle from our September import. Right now that bottle is in a cardboard case, on a shrink-wrapped pallet, in a consolidation warehouse in Scotland, waiting on a ship.
They paid for it anyway.
Think about that. A customer handed us money for a limited bottle that has not crossed the ocean yet, based on nothing but trust that The Whiskey Lab will deliver. That is not a transaction. That is a handshake. And when someone extends that kind of trust, we owe them something back. This post is about what that something is, and why pre-order pricing is not a marketing gimmick.
Every Brand We Carry Is a Mom and Pop
When you see 36 releases from six independent bottlers landing in one month, it is easy to picture six companies with loading docks and inventory systems. The reality: most independent bottlers are two or three people who are very good at finding whisky.
There is no sitting inventory. The whisky is by definition limited, one cask, a few hundred bottles, gone forever after that. The labels do not exist until a release is confirmed. Every release means orchestrating production from scratch, and nothing about it is standard.
Picture one brand with five releases coming. The casks sit in two different warehouses and have to be trucked to one bottling hall. The glass, the labels, the corks, the seals all have to arrive on time. Everything gets bottled, labeled, boxed, and checked. That is a normal month for the bottlers we work with. We are all small operations working together, and we pay these brands up front, before a single bottle leaves Scotland.
The Part Nobody Sees
Once our portion of each brand's bottling is ready, the real work starts. Here is the actual path a bottle takes to reach Texas:
One wrong number and the whole import sits in customs. Every weight, every ABV, every liter of pure alcohol has to be right the first time. This is why small importers age in dog years.
All of that happens behind the scenes, and all of it costs money we have already spent by the time you see a bottle on the site.
Why Pre-Orders Change What We Can Offer You
Here is the part most shops will not tell you. Pre-orders do not just help us. They decide how much whisky we can bring in.
When customers pre-order, we can commit to more releases on the same import. More casks, more brands, more choice. If we waited until every product landed and sold off the shelf before funding the next import, The Whiskey Lab would move at a fraction of its speed and you would be choosing from a fraction of the selection.
The customers who pre-order are, quite literally, the reason the catalog grows.
The Reward
So we built the pricing to reflect that, and the logic is simple. Before a bottle lands, you have saved us the cost of holding it in inventory. We have not paid to shelve it, count it, insure it, or sit on it. You carried a piece of the risk with us, so you get a piece of the savings back.
No coupon codes, no games. The discount exists because the economics are genuinely different before landing, and because the people who trust us early deserve to be treated differently.
Thank You
I want to be direct about this. Every pre-order is someone extending trust to a small operation importing whisky from other small operations an ocean away. We do not take that lightly. The discount is gratitude, priced in.
You trust us to deliver exceptional, limited whisky. We reward that trust with the best price the bottle will ever have, and your box is the first one packed when the pallets land. It is a win for both sides, and it is the reason this whole thing works.
Trust is the only thing we cannot import. You bring that. We bring the whisky.
The September releases are open for pre-order now. 36 releases, six independent bottlers, landing over the next two weeks.
