A Core Range Built Differently

Repeatable. Not Identical.

The Blue Collection is Uncharted Whisky Co.'s new core range, and it does something most core ranges refuse to do: every batch will be slightly different. Same concept, same 8 year Highland character, same minimal-intervention philosophy. But each batch is drawn from a fresh selection of ex-bourbon barrels, and no two will taste exactly the same.

That is the point. A blended core range can be made consistent by marrying dozens of casks and adjusting with caramel and water. A small batch core range, built from a handful of carefully selected casks at natural strength, cannot. Each batch is its own moment in time. If you love one, the next one will be adjacent, not identical.

What's on the label vs. what's in the bottle

On the label

  • Region: Highland
  • Age: 8 years
  • ABV: 46%
  • Distillery: not named
  • Batch number: not printed

What we can tell you

  • Distillery: Aultmore (Speyside, within the broader Highland region)
  • Current batch: Batch 1
  • Casks: 3 ex-bourbon barrels selected from a larger pool
  • Distilled: March 6, 2017
  • Total: 640 bottles globally, 120 in the USA
Uncharted's decision to front-load the Blue Collection brand, rather than the distillery name, is intentional: this range is about the philosophy more than any single distillery. We believe you should still have the specifics, so we publish them here.
What "minimal intervention" actually means

Minimal intervention is a term borrowed from the wine world. It means we did nothing that did not need doing. No colouring. No chill filtration. No finishing casks. Nowhere to hide behind, no corrective measures to smooth over the parts of the whisky that would otherwise show their edges.

No Colouring
What you see is the cask
No Chill Filter
Full flavour compounds intact
No Finish
Single maturation, full stop
Small Batch
Only the casks that earned it

The ABV is 46% because it has to be. Any lower and the natural flavour compounds in an unfiltered whisky start to go cloudy. They might still do it at low temperatures anyway, and that is simply the nature of a non-chill-filtered whisky. We think those aromatics are worth keeping. They are part of the whisky's DNA.

If you have ever had a whisky below 46%, you can bet your bottom dollar that it has been chill filtered to remove those cloud-causing compounds, and very likely coloured to make the result look the way the market expects whisky to look. The Blue Collection does neither.

Current Batch Batch No. 1

Batch 1 was built from a handful of ex-bourbon barrels selected for their bright fragrance, fruit-forward character, and sweet finish. Only 3 casks made the cut. The rest went back to the rackhouse for further maturation.

Uncharted does not print batch numbers on the Blue Collection label. If you want to know which batch is in your bottle, check here. We will keep this product page current.

About the source distillery

Batch 1 is drawn from Aultmore, founded in 1896 near Keith and owned today by Bacardi. The distillery has spent most of its life feeding the Dewar's blending program, and its distillate is prized by blenders for its bright, grassy, fruit-forward character.

Though Aultmore sits in the Speyside heartland, the Blue Collection label carries the broader Highland designation, which is Uncharted's call and reflects their choice to position this range around the philosophy rather than the geography.

Future batches may come from Aultmore or may come from a different Highland distillery entirely. We will tell you when that changes.

Cask profile, ex-bourbon

The Blue Collection is built on ex-bourbon maturation, the quiet workhorse of Scotch whisky. American oak that has already given up its heaviest charred-sugar flavors in its first life as a bourbon barrel, now lending vanilla, coconut, and soft oak spice to the distillate without overwhelming it.

Ex-bourbon is the truth-teller cask. Active enough to add character. Quiet enough to let the distillate come through. A minimal intervention release almost has to be ex-bourbon. Any other choice would be asking the cask to do work the whisky should be doing on its own.

Repeatable, not identical. A core range you can come back to, where the next bottle always has something of its own to say.
