THE INCHMURRIN DUO, ONE SPIRIT FOUR YEARS APART
Inchmurrin is Loch Lomond's light, tropical, unpeated spirit, the one that makes a perfect canvas for a finishing cask. Tri Carragh gave it two very different canvases. The 8 Year spent 22 months in a second fill Palo Cortado, the rarest style of sherry, and was chosen blind by our first Scotland tour group in March 2026: five casks on the table, no names, unanimous. The 12 Year spent nine months in a 50 litre red wine octave that previously held peated whisky. Only 78 bottles of it exist.
Same distillery, same bottler, four years and two casks apart. Sold as a set, 10% cheaper than the two bottles on their own.
Bottle one: Inchmurrin 8 Year, 2nd Fill Palo Cortado
- Distilled November 15, 2017. Refill ex-bourbon, then 22 months in a second fill Palo Cortado cask. Bottled exclusively for The Whiskey Lab.
- 58.9% cask strength, natural colour, non-chill filtered. 72 bottles, all in the US.
- Zesty and savoury with tropical fruit underneath. Tropical fruit and vanilla first, then a savoury, almost smoky depth that is not peat but reads like it. Super long, peppery and warming.
Bottle two: Inchmurrin 12 Year, Ex-Peated Red Wine Octave
- Distilled January 6, 2014. Nine months in a second fill red wine octave that held peated whisky. Tri Carragh Release 10.
- 59.9% cask strength, natural colour, non-chill filtered. 78 bottles in the world.
- Tri Carragh's notes: blackberries, blackcurrants and raspberry coulis, lemon zest and candied orange peel. Milk chocolate, caramel and forest fruits with ginger spice and soft oak tannins. Warming spice, dark berries and chocolate-covered fruit.
Why a set
Both casks carry a whisper of smoke, and neither whisky is peated. In the 8 it comes from the Palo Cortado's savoury depth; in the 12 it comes from the wine cask's former tenant. Pour them together and you get a lesson in how two completely different casks can leave the same fingerprint on the same spirit. Then the fruit takes over and they go their separate ways.
