STRATHMILL 11 YEAR, CREAM SHERRY HOGSHEAD
Sometimes you don't know what you've got until it's gone. That is Little Brown Dog's opening line on Strathmill, the distillery tucked away at the side of the road in Keith that might seem pretty anonymous, with plenty of local rumours that it is largely mothballed despite its importance to the J&B recipe. LBD chose to bottle this cask for a simple reason: it's just wonderfully rounded. An American oak cream sherry hogshead giving a more subtle style of sherry, well integrated, clean and very drinkable.
Filled 7 April 2015, bottled 21 July 2026 at 54.6% cask strength. 286 bottles, natural colour, non-chill filtered. Imported by The Whiskey Lab.
About Little Brown Dog
Little Brown Dog Spirits is an Aberdeenshire independent bottler and micro-distillery, founded in 2018 by Andrew Smith (a vet) and Chris Reid (a farmer) and run from the farm at Fetternear. Their motto is "traditionally unconventional": radical transparency about what is in the bottle, a story behind every label, and a healthy obsession with dogs and old cars. The team is Andrew, Chris and designer Alex.
LBD is already on the shelf at The Whiskey Lab, including their Aberdeenshire Single Malt core expression. This is one of their August 2026 releases, fresh across the Atlantic.
Distillery profile, Strathmill
- Began life in 1891 in Keith, Speyside, converted from an old grain mill during the Victorian whisky boom.
- Almost all of its make disappears into blends, most importantly J&B, where it is a core component. Official single malt bottlings are genuinely scarce.
- Per LBD, there are a lot of rumours locally about the distillery being largely mothballed, despite its importance to that recipe.
- An anonymous-seeming distillery, which is exactly why an independent single cask like this is worth grabbing while it exists.
An LBD style of sherry, in their own words
This is an LBD style of sherry rather than a full on smack about the chops: well integrated, clean and very drinkable, from an American oak cream sherry hogshead making for a more subtle style of sherry, something they are really into.
As with all of their small batch and single cask releases, it's bottled at cask strength, natural colour and non chill filtered.
The label is a nod to the pied wagtail of the F&F series, the whiskies that really brought many whisky drinkers their first tastes of some classic distillates as single malts. LBD didn't feel brave enough to use the LBD J&B logo they mocked up, but in their own words: maybe if you see them, they'll scribble it on a napkin for you.
