ORKNEY 24 YEAR, SMALL BATCH
In Little Brown Dog's own words: "Well it's clearly not Scapa or we'd tell you." Naming rights are a funny old thing, and LBD, champions of radical transparency, cannot name the Orkney distillery this 2001 vintage came from. They think that's a bit silly, especially when it's as obvious as this, and have joked about reverting to what3words coordinates instead. What they can tell you: a vatting of two refill hogsheads, sister casks with low fill levels. Low fills aren't great for yield, but they do make magnificently oxidised whisky.
Distilled in 2001 and bottled 21 July 2026 at 24 years old and 53.1% cask strength. 428 bottles, natural colour, non-chill filtered. Imported by The Whiskey Lab.
About Little Brown Dog
Little Brown Dog Spirits is an Aberdeenshire independent bottler and micro-distillery, founded in 2018 by Andrew Smith (a vet) and Chris Reid (a farmer) and run from the farm at Fetternear. Their motto is "traditionally unconventional": radical transparency about what is in the bottle, a story behind every label, and a healthy obsession with dogs and old cars. The team is Andrew, Chris and designer Alex.
LBD is already on the shelf at The Whiskey Lab, including their Aberdeenshire Single Malt core expression. This is one of their August 2026 releases, fresh across the Atlantic.
Source profile, somewhere in Orkney
- Orkney is Scotland's northernmost whisky outpost, an archipelago with exactly two working distilleries. LBD are only allowed to tell you which one this is not.
- Faint peat comes across as distant smoke: not dominating, seasoning the spirit, adding to the salinity and depth, with that sweet fruitiness that only comes from age.
- Refill wood gave this spirit the space and time it needed to get to 24 years. LBD think good refill wood is one of the things that really separates Scotch from the world whiskies, allowing longer maturation without the spirit being dominated by wood.
- LBD's verdict: right up their street, exceptional value, well aged single malt. You know you want some.
Puffins on the label, in LBD's own words
As bottlers, LBD still struggle to understand why some casks can be named and others cannot. There are reasons, but they still think it's a bit silly, "especially when it's as obvious as this... just you wait until you see what's next on the list..."
Puffins on the label because they're the coolest seabirds ever, and they make for a better label than the Churchill barriers that Chris wanted to use. And yes, they did make Alex try those as a design.
The important bit is the whisky: two sister refill hogsheads, magnificently oxidised, vatted together at 53.1%. Well aged Orkney malt at this price does not hang around.
