THE ABERLOUR DUO, TWO 11 YEAR SINGLE CASKS
The rarest kind of whisky experiment: the same distillery, the same age, bottled by two different houses from two different sherry casks. One is Little Brown Dog's big, dark first fill Oloroso hogshead. The other is our own Whispering Waters, drawn from a first fill Ximénez-Spínola PX cask. Both are single cask Aberlour, both 11 years old, both cask strength, and side by side they answer a question most drinkers never get to ask: what does the cask really do?
The supply math is brutal: 310 bottles of the Little Brown Dog exist worldwide, 220 of the Whispering Waters, and The Whiskey Lab's allocation of matched pairs is far smaller than either number. Sold only as the two-bottle set.
Bottle one: Little Brown Dog, 1st Fill Oloroso Hogshead
- Distilled at Aberlour 2 December 2014, bottled 16 July 2026 at 11 years.
- 54.4% cask strength, natural colour, non chill filtered. 310 bottles worldwide.
- In LBD's own words: a big old Oloroso monster. Not their usual style of sherry, and that is exactly the fun of it: it scratches the sherry bomb itch in spades.
- The label's geometric pattern is monkey puzzle foliage, drawn from the old tree outside the Aberlour gatehouse.
- LBD's notes: black cherry jam, cacao, pencil case; dark chocolate Brazil nuts, boozy clootie dumpling; hot honey, coffee cake.
Bottle two: Whispering Waters, 1st Fill Ximénez-Spínola PX
- The Whiskey Lab's house brand, bottled from a single first fill Ximénez-Spínola Pedro Ximénez cask.
- Ximénez-Spínola is the storied Jerez house that works exclusively with the Pedro Ximénez grape; its casks are among the most sought-after PX wood in Scotland.
- 57.7% cask strength, natural colour, non chill filtered. 220 bottles worldwide.
- Where the Oloroso runs dark and dry, the PX brings dense, sweet fruit: the marzipan-and-raisin end of the sherry spectrum.
Why a set
Pour them side by side. Same spirit, same eleven years, and two completely different whiskies in the glass: Oloroso's dry, dark richness against PX's syrupy sweetness. It is the clearest lesson in cask influence we can put in a box, and with both releases this small, the pair will not exist again.
One set contains one 700ml bottle of each release.
