Blackadder Raw Cask Auchroisk 12 Year Old, Oloroso Montilla Finish

Distilled 4 February 2014 · Cask No. 803574 · Raw Cask Series
Region Speyside Distillery Auchroisk Age 12 Years ABV 53.2% Cask Oloroso Montilla Finish Volume 700ml

Auchroisk (say it "Oth-rusk") distilled on 4 February 2014 and bottled at 12 years old from Cask No. 803574, after a finishing period in an Oloroso Montilla cask. Cask strength, 53.2% ABV, bottled Raw Cask: straight from the wood with no filtration of any kind.

Two things make this bottle unusual. Auchroisk itself, a distillery built to feed the J&B blend, whose single malt almost never reaches drinkers except through independents. And the finishing cask: not Jerez sherry but its inland cousin from Montilla-Moriles, the Andalusian region where oloroso-style wine is made from Pedro Ximenez grapes. Same oxidative tradition, different origin, and a cask type few bottlers use.

About Blackadder

Blackadder International was founded in 1995 by Robin Tucek and remains a family operation, run with his daughter Hannah and son Michael. The house philosophy has never changed: the cask is king. Blackadder selects individual casks on their own merits, bottles at natural strength or close to it, and never chill filters or adds colour.

Raw Cask is the purest expression of that philosophy. The whisky goes from cask to bottle with no filtration at all, not even a mechanical screen. Fragments of char and cask sediment (Blackadder calls them cask throwings) travel with the spirit into the glass bottle. What you hold is, as literally as bottling allows, the inside of Cask No. 803574.

Distillery profile

  • Built in the early 1970s near Mulben, Speyside, by IDV, then the parent company of Justerini & Brooks. Production began in 1974, drawing water from Dorie's Well.
  • Purpose-built for one job: supplying malt for the J&B Rare blend, a role it still plays for owner Diageo.
  • Its single malt first appeared in 1986 as The Singleton, a name chosen partly because Auchroisk was considered too hard to pronounce abroad.
  • Official bottlings remain limited to the occasional Flora & Fauna release, so single casks like this one are largely the territory of independent bottlers.

Cask profile

Distilled 4 February 2014, this Auchroisk finished its maturation in an Oloroso Montilla cask, No. 803574. Montilla-Moriles is Andalusia's inland wine region, where oloroso-style wines are made from Pedro Ximenez grapes rather than the Palomino of Jerez, and the sun-baked climate often brings the wine to full strength without fortification.

The wood works the same oxidative territory as a Jerez oloroso cask, but from a different starting wine. It is a finishing cask chosen for character, not for a familiar name on the label.

Bottled at 53.2% ABV, full cask strength. No chill filtration, no filtration of any kind, no added colour. One cask, one run of bottles.

On Tasting Notes

You will not find Blackadder's tasting notes here. By design.

Blackadder shares every technical detail a curious drinker could ask for: distillery, cask number, distillation date, bottling date, ABV, outturn. Everything that makes the liquid what it is. What they leave to you is the experience of drinking it.

Tasting notes shape expectation. They tell you what you should find before you find it. Blackadder's position is that the spirit in your glass should speak for itself, and what you find there belongs to you. Pour it neat. Add a few drops of water if it asks for it. Take your time. The cask did.
