Blackadder Raw Cask Ardmore 14 Year Old, Ex-Laphroaig Cask
Peat on peat. This is Ardmore, the Highlands' great peated malt, distilled on 26 April 2011 and aged 14 years in a cask that previously held Laphroaig. Cask No. 800153, bottled straight from the wood at 59.3% ABV, Raw Cask style: no filtration, sediment and char included.
The pairing is the point. Ardmore's peat is Highland peat: earthy, dry, inland. Laphroaig's is the medicinal, maritime smoke of Islay's south shore. Fourteen years in an ex-Laphroaig cask lets one peat tradition mature inside the residue of another. Independent bottlers rarely get to run this experiment, and Blackadder bottled the result at full strength.
About Blackadder
Blackadder International was founded in 1995 by Robin Tucek and remains a family operation, run with his daughter Hannah and son Michael. The house philosophy has never changed: the cask is king. Blackadder selects individual casks on their own merits, bottles at natural strength or close to it, and never chill filters or adds colour.
Raw Cask is the purest expression of that philosophy. The whisky goes from cask to bottle with no filtration at all, not even a mechanical screen. Fragments of char and cask sediment (Blackadder calls them cask throwings) travel with the spirit into the glass bottle. What you hold is, as literally as bottling allows, the inside of Cask No. 800153.
Distillery profile
- Founded 1898 by Adam Teacher at Kennethmont, Aberdeenshire, built specifically to secure peated malt for the family firm William Teacher & Sons.
- Ardmore remains the fingerprint malt of Teacher's Highland Cream, and the distillery is now owned by Suntory Global Spirits.
- One of the few Highland distilleries that kept peat at the core of its production after most of the mainland abandoned it.
- Its house style is earthy, dry Highland smoke rather than coastal Islay peat, which makes it a favourite of independent bottlers looking for smoke with a different accent.
Cask profile
Cask No. 800153 previously held Laphroaig, the south shore Islay malt whose heavily peated, medicinal character is among the most recognisable in Scotch whisky. A cask that has held Laphroaig carries that identity in its wood.
Filled with Ardmore spirit distilled 26 April 2011, the cask spent 14 years layering Islay residue over Highland peat. Two smoke traditions, one cask, no shortcuts.
Bottled at 59.3% ABV, full cask strength. No chill filtration, no filtration of any kind, no added colour. A single cask: when it is gone, it is gone.
