TRI CARRAGH - GLENLOSSIE 10 YEAR - 1ST FILL BOURBON
A Speyside single malt that lands the bourbon barrel profile cleanly: green apple, vanilla, and orchard sweetness with a warming spice underneath. Distilled in February 2015, matured in refill bourbon, then reracked into a 1st fill bourbon barrel in November 2023 for the final stretch. The first fill cask did its job, lifting the spirit's natural fruit character without overpowering it.
Glenlossie is one of the great unsung Speyside distilleries. Independent bottlings at this age, this strength, and this cask combination are why people seek out Tri Carragh.
About Tri Carragh
Tri Carragh is Gaelic for "three pillars," a nod to the three core ingredients that make whisky: water, barley, and yeast. The independent bottler selects single casks one at a time, choosing each one for the conversation it will start. Every release is small. Every release is final. When the bottles are gone, that cask is gone.
This release is part of Tri Carragh's quarterly outturn and was selected by The Whiskey Lab for import to the United States.
Distillery profile
- Glenlossie sits in Elgin, Speyside, founded in 1876. Owned by Diageo and primarily used as a backbone malt for blends, including Haig's Gold Label.
- Known for a clean, grassy, fruit-forward spirit driven by tall, slow stills and a long fermentation. The light spirit takes well to bourbon casks, picking up vanilla and orchard fruit cleanly.
- Rarely seen as an official single malt, Glenlossie's reputation lives almost entirely through independent bottlings like this one.
- This particular cask was reracked into a 1st fill bourbon barrel in November 2023, an active wood that brings the bourbon profile forward in the final two years.
Cask profile
Originally matured in refill ex-bourbon, the spirit was reracked into a 1st fill bourbon barrel in November 2023 for its final stretch before bottling. First fill bourbon is the most active fresh-from-Kentucky wood available, still alive with vanillin, coconut, and charred sugar from the original bourbon.
The reracking is what makes this release distinct. A Glenlossie matured entirely in refill would be lighter and more cereal-forward. This one carries the depth of a full primary maturation with the brightness of a fresh first fill on top. The fruit gets bigger, the vanilla rounds out, the finish gains a warming spice.
Bottled at 52.4% cask strength, non-chill filtered, natural colour. 225 bottles total.
