Jura 2008 · 17 Year Old Double Sherry Matured Single Malt
A Full Sherry Whisky, And Honest About It
Two Sherry Casks, No Half Measures
It began in a French oak oloroso hogshead. Good, but not the sherry profile Little Brown Dog were chasing, so they moved it into PX sherry for a further nine months. The result is unapologetic. This is a big, sweet, sherry-driven whisky, and LBD do not pretend otherwise.
What keeps it from being one-dimensional is the spirit underneath. The slightly herbal Jura character holds up and pushes back through all that sherry, and there is no tannic harshness in the way. When they drew the last cask samples, the liquid was so dark they laughed.
300 bottles, at 50.3%.
Distillery profile, Jura
- The only distillery on the Isle of Jura, in the Inner Hebrides off the west coast, next door to Islay.
- Best known for a lightly herbal, gently oily spirit that sits between Highland and island styles.
- That herbal thread is exactly what survives here, giving the sherry something to work against rather than smother.
Cask profile, double sherry
Filled to a French oak oloroso hogshead, then re-racked into PX sherry for nine months to push the sweetness and depth LBD wanted.
The sherry is clean rather than aggressive, with no drying tannin, which is what lets the fruit stay sweet and the spirit stay visible.
