It's a spirit with real weight and character, rich, slightly meaty and full-bodied, but it needs the right cask to let it really shine. A tired cask can leave it feeling a bit closed, but an active first-fill bourbon barrel brings it to life. This cask is one of the best examples of that marriage I've come across.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe bourbon influence is unmistakable, with layers of vanilla wrapped around Benrinnes' rich, savoury spirit. As it opens up, tropical fruits begin to emerge, and at 57.4% cask strength there's a wonderfully oily texture that carries everything across the palate. For me, that's the difference between a good whisky and a great one.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI found this cask at the end of one of those long warehouse days where your palate is starting to wonder what you've done to it. We'd pulled around sixty samples, and after nosing and tasting our way through about half of them with the rest of the team, this one made everyone stop. We all looked at each other and came to exactly the same conclusion: it was \u003cstrong\u003ethe standout cask of the day\u003c\/strong\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePeople often ask what my favourite style of whisky is, and I always come back to full bourbon maturation.
